#FirstChapterFriday

The idea to try out #FirstChapterFriday was first suggested by English Teacher Ashley Juhl, who learned about it on social media. Since we started #FirstChapterFriday at West Hills, it has been fun to see students choose to read books that they might not encounter otherwise on their own.

How does it work?
  • The Teacher Librarian prepares a varied selection of good books with enticing openings, marking passages to be read aloud.
  • Teachers read aloud an opening chapter (or other marked text selection) in class for fun.
  • If a student in class would like to continue reading the book, they may check it out on the spot, simply filling out a sticky note with their name and ID.
  • As books get checked out, the Teacher Librarian refreshes the stock with more books!

To browse books that have been shared as #FirstChapterFriday reads in the past (since these may be good books to try out anytime), see the embedded, clickable slideshow and spreadsheet below with previously shared titles.
